my lost city

Greenwich Village footsteps type out
a story she imagined would be
some magnificent epic
three-volume set
with the potential for
more.
McDonald’s fries and a latte
her company during workshop prep
pass by lavishly decorated brownstones in October
on the way to literature seminars
half-wondering what scandalous acts
the pumpkins would commit this
time.
Sometimes she’d catch the early train
find herself in stacks at the Strand
before skipping down streets
in need of Pomme Frites devoured in
Washington Square Park while the
fountains kiss the heavens.
she utters a single word
at the vision:
please.
there’s never a good time for a goodbye.
